Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons shortening
1/2 cup warm water
3 cups vegetable oil, for frying
For Garnish (Optional):
Powdered sugar
Honey
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening with a fork or pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add warm water, mixing just until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough gently for 2–3 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.
- Heat 2 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F–360°F.
- Roll the rested dough on a floured surface into a 9×12-inch rectangle. Cut into 12 squares or rectangles.
- Fry a few pieces at a time for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden and puffed.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey before serving.
Notes
Ensure oil temperature stays between 350°F–360°F for perfect puffing.
Toss in cinnamon sugar for a dessert twist.
Fill with savory fillings like beans or chicken for a meal version.
Air fry at 350°F for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through, for a lighter version.
Store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in the oven to restore crispness.
