Ingredients
1 pound breakfast sausage
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 3/4 – 2 cups buttermilk
1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup salted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450°F. Spray a 9×9-inch glass or ceramic baking dish with nonstick spray.
- Cook breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes until no pink remains. Drain the sausage on paper towels.
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and baking powder. Add buttermilk and stir until a sticky batter forms, adding more buttermilk if needed.
- Gently stir in the shredded cheese and cooked sausage.
- Pour the melted butter into the prepared baking dish. Add the biscuit dough on top and spread it evenly. Cut the dough into 9 squares.
- Bake on the middle rack for 25-30 minutes, rotating once, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean. If the biscuits are browning too quickly, cover them with foil.
Notes
Spicy Sausage: Swap the breakfast sausage for a spicy variety to add a kick to these biscuits.
Different Cheese: Experiment with different cheeses, such as Monterey Jack or pepper jack, for a unique twist.
Add Herbs: Add a teaspoon of dried herbs like thyme, rosemary, or oregano to the dough for extra flavor.
Vegetarian Version: Use plant-based sausage and dairy-free cheese for a vegetarian or vegan-friendly version.
